A video shared on social media today shows a Ugandan individual, known as Siazi or Keem Love, being denied entry to a Ugandan community event held in the United States. The incident reportedly occurred because of their sexual orientation and gender expression. Siazi, who identifies as gay and presents as female, was emotional after being turned away at the venue.
The video has sparked online discussions, with many pointing to the growing influence of Uganda’s anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments within diaspora communities. Some social media users expressed concern that discrimination, once limited to within Uganda’s borders, is now appearing abroad.
This incident follows the passage of Uganda’s 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act, one of the world’s harshest anti-LGBTQ+ laws, which allows for life imprisonment in certain cases. Since its enactment, LGBTQ+ Ugandans have faced increasing persecution, both at home and in exile.
The video continues to gain traction, highlighting the ongoing challenges LGBTQ+ individuals face even outside of Ugandaand raising questions about how diaspora communities engage with issues of inclusion, identity, and human rights.
